Volunteer Opportunities

CSEP is a leader in advancing exercise science in Canada, and there is always work to be done.  From our publications and resources, to our certifications and professional development, most of CSEP's best and most visible work has been led by volunteers: CSEP-PATH and its predecessors, Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines; Get Active Questionnaire, the Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism (APNM) Journal editorial board; and AGMs for 50+ years, to name a few.

Board of Directors

The CSEP Board of Directors plays an important role providing leadership and overseeing the activities of the organization. The Board is responsible to the members and has the obligation to render an account for the responsibility conferred. The Board represents the interests of the members and the broader community, and, in setting direction, the Board actively consults with members and the community at large. The Board ensures that CSEP operates with appropriate transparency and is active and forthright in its communications. 

The Board is responsible to be knowledgeable about risks inherent in CSEP’s operations and ensures that appropriate risk analysis is performed as part of Board decision-making. The Board ensures that appropriate programs and processes are in place to protect against risk.

Current Chair: Adam Upshaw, PhD, Niagara College

Time Commitment:  two-year term, monthly teleconference calls, two full-day meetings and assorted ad hoc tasks

Positions Open: An annual Call for Nominations for vacant positions occurs June-August each year.   

Standing Committees

CSEP currently has six standing committees that serve the Board of Directors.

CSEP Finance Committee

The CSEP Finance Committee is comprised of the Chair, Chair-elect, Treasurer, Chair of CSEP Member Services Committee, and Chair of CSEP Professional Standards Program® Committee. 

CSEP Nominations Committee

The CSEP Nominations Committee is responsible for overseeing, soliciting and presenting a list of volunteers who are qualified and skilled persons capable of, and committed to, providing effective leadership and contributions to CSEP.

CSEP Professional Standards Program® Committee

Committee Purpose: The CSEP Professional Standards Program® Committee is responsible for developing, establishing, and maintaining standards for credentialing including qualification, certification, accreditation and professional practice.

Objective of the Program: Essentially, there are two objectives to the CSEP-PSP®.  The first is to establish voluntary standards of competence for personnel and centres on a national scale, and to encourage those currently working in the field or anticipating entering the field to comply with these standards.  The second is to provide consumer protection by educating the public to recognize the distinction in qualifications between levels in the model.

Time Commitment: two-year term, teleconference every 4-6 weeks, one in person meeting, and associated ad hoc tasks.

Under the CSEP-PSP® Committee are two standing sub-committees that report to, and work with, the CSEP-PSP® Committee: 

  1. CSEP Certified Personal Trainer Sub-Committee
  2. CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist Sub-Committee

CSEP Knowledge Translation Committee

 The CSEP Knowledge Translation Committee is responsible for defining, developing, and implementing effective knowledge translation activities related to CSEP’s evidence-based body of knowledge and advancing certification in a timely manner.

Time Commitment: two-year term, teleconference every 6-8 weeks, and associated ad hoc tasks.
CSEP Member Services Committee

The CSEP Member Services Committee is responsible for generating ideas, programs and services for the recruitment of new members and continued enhancement of current membership benefits (including awards) as well as monitoring the effectiveness of member programs and services.

CSEP Conference Committee

 The mandate of the CSEP Conference Committee is to ensure that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) program contains breadth of content consistent with the CSEP mission and reflects the diverse interests of the CSEP membership.  To facilitate this mandate, the Program Committee works in tandem with the AGM Local Organizing Committees to build upon lessons learned and provide a rich learning experience for members.

Student Sub-Committee

The purpose of the CSEP Student Sub-Committee is to increase graduate and undergraduate student involvement within the society by enhancing and creating student-oriented programs. The Student Sub-Committee will communicate students' needs, questions and initiatives to the Member Services Committee in an effort to cultivate a spirit of interest and fellowship within the society.
